The job interview: what questions can you expect?

During the job interview, various questions are asked in order to find out if you´re the right person for a certain position. For example, questions are posed to find out what kind of person you are, but also to discover what work experience you have and how you function in an organisation.

If you have a job interview coming up soon, it’s important that you know what questions to expect.
In this way you can prepare answers to these questions, so that you always give the right one.
On this page you can read more about the various questions that you can expect to be asked during your job interview.

Standard job interview questions

A job interview generally begins with a few standard questions, so that your interlocutor can see what kind of person you are. The first questions to expect during a job interview are ones like:

  • What are your strengths?
  • What are your weaknesses?
  • Tell something about yourself.
  • Why do you want this job?
  • Where do you see yourself five years from now?

Questions about you

Once you´ve answered the above questions, your interlocutor often continues the job interview by asking a few questions about you as a person. For example, your interlocutor can ask what you like doing, how you would describe your personality and what kind of people you can work well with together. In addition, you can also be asked what kind of working environment you prefer to work in, so that your interlocutor can immediately judge whether you are suitable for the company’s working environment.

Questions about your working style and career

Naturally, your interlocutor would also like to know what kind of colleague you are. Therefore your interlocutor will not only ask you what kind of person you are, but also how you collaborate, what you find to be an enjoyable way of working and how you get along inside an organisation. Obviously one also asks where you´ve already worked, what you did at those companies and what you learned there. Your career is a major subject in the job interview, so be clear that you will get questions on this. Questions such as ´what are you most proud of?´, ´which project did you find the most interesting to work on?´ and ´what’s the most difficult thing you’ve done so far in your career?´ are also frequently asked. This makes it important to prepare for such questions well before you go into the interview.

Original job interview questions

Some companies find it important not only to ask you the standard questions, but also to come up with a few original ones for the job interview. Companies do so not only to see how your mind works, but also to observe how you react to unusual situations that you haven´t prepared yourself for, because you can prepare for standard questions by formulating a response in advance, but of course that isn´t the case with wild-card questions. Original questions you might get during your job interview include:

  • How many times do the large and small hands of a clock overlap over the course of a single day?
  • If you could be an animal, which one would you want to be?
  • How could you weigh an airplane without a scale?
  • What superpower would you like to possess, and why?
  • Sell me this plant.
